Dr Barnard studied medicine at Flinders University, completing a degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1985. He completed post-graduate training in the Family Medicine Program in 1992, and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 1993. He became a life member of the college in 2023, following 35 years continuous membership. His main focus in General Practice is in Geriatric Medicine.

His interests outside of medicine include music, literature and stamp collecting. Prior to studying medicine he completed a Bachelor of Arts at Monash University. Due to existing case loads he is unable to take on new patients.
